In 1910 the Canadian dollar was officially defined in terms of fine gold instead of the gold sovereign so that it became the exact gold equivalent of the US dollar. When World War I began, Canada, like the United Kingdom, went off the gold standard. In 1929, Canadian banks ceased redeeming notes in gold, ending the adherence to the gold standard.

The official gold bullion coin of Canada is The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin which was minted for the first time in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint. Before this coin was minted, the only other bullion coin used was the Krugerrand which was not widely available. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin had a purity of 0.999 fineness. In other words, it had almost no base materials at all. This coin was designed by Walter Ott and was one of the purest gold coins in the world at the time. The coin was offered in many denominations ranging from 1/20 oz to 1 oz.

In November 1982, The Royal Canadian Mint became the first world mint to commercially start manufacturing 99.99% pure gold coins as it introduced a new range of Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins with  0.9999 fineness. This resulted in the Gold Maple Leaf getting instant recognition in the bullion coin market and till today it still remains the most recognized and one of the most sought after coins in the bullion markets. Since pure gold coins are especially soft, the Maple Leaf emblem on the coin can get easily scratched and so it requires great care when handling as a scratched Maple Leaf gold coin would have a lower resell value.

In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint unveiled a new Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin which had a face value of $1,000,000. This coin was 3cm thick, had a diameter of 50cm, weighed 100kgs and had a gold fineness of 0.99999. It was created and designed by Stanley Witten.

Apart from minting gold coins that would be used within the country itself, The Royal Canadian Mint has also reached an agreement with the International Olympic Committee to print Olympic Gold Maple Leaf coins. This will allow the Royal Canadian Mint to mint gold coins emblazoned with the Maple Leaf in time for the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010.

Canada’s official bullion coin is called the Gold Maple Leaf. The design (by Walter Ott) was unveiled in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint. Before this coin was created, the only other popular gold bullion coin was the South African Krugerrand and it was hard to find. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf has a purity of 0.999 and contains almost no base materials.

The coin is offered in many denominations, sizes and weights ranging from 1/20 oz to 1 oz. On this particular page we have 1 oz Maple Leaf coins for your consideration.

In 1982, the Mint became the first to make a 99.99% pure gold coin. This resulted in the coin getting instant fame in the gold bullion market and it still remains the most recognized and one of the most sought after coins. Collectors and investors alike favor this coin. Since pure gold coins are very malleable, the Maple Leaf emblem on the coin can get ruined if it is treated poorly. In 2007, the largest Gold Maple Leaf was displayed to the public, which had a face value of one million dollars. This coin is 3cm thick, has diameter of 50cm, weighs 100kgs and has a purity of 0.99999. The coin was designed by Stanley Witten. It is not for sale.

A mint state coin is any coin that is in the same perfect condition that it was in after having left the mint. Such mint state coins should show absolutely no sign of circulation through human hands. However, it is possible for such coins to show some mint processing defects such as dents or bag marks. The main reason why such coins should never touch any human hands is because the oils from one’s bare fingers could mar the surfaces of coins.

When grading any coins, it is best to grade coins one at a time with the utmost precision. Many international grading companies like the ICCS use various grading systems that help to determine the condition of the coin in use. For Mint State coins the following are the various grades that are assigned.

  • MS-60 -Typical Mintstate
  • MS-61 -Typical Mintstate
  • MS-62 -Select Mintstate
  • MS-63 -Choice Mintstate
  • MS-64 -Very Choice Mintstate
  • MS-65 -Gem Mintstate
  • MS-66 -Gem Mintstate
  • MS-67 -Superb Mintstate
  • MS-68 -Superb Mintstate
  • MS-69 -Superb Mintstate
  • MS-70 -Perfect Mintstate

In the above grading, MS stands for ‘Mint State’ and the numeric value assigned to it denotes the grade value assigned to the coin. 60 is the lowest possible designation that can be assigned to a coin and might indicate that the coin has a very weak base or that it might have minor scratch marks. However, it should be noted that even this low value of 60 is a much higher grade than a coin that has been in circulation. On the other hand, MS-70 denotes a coin that is perfect and has no defects at all. But there are very few coins that have a grade value of 70.

Each successive coin in the numeric values will be of similar quality to its precedent, the only difference being in that it will have fewer marks and hairlines cracks. For instance, an MS-66 coin will have better color and be more lustrous than an MS-63 coin; but at the same time, it might have more hairline cracks than an MS-69 coin.

In order for a coin to be considered rare, it has to satisfy two terms of evaluation. Firstly, the retail coin price and second its current value. The value of the coin mainly depends on the current value of it in the markets. What adds to the value of such rare coins is their scarcity. The scarcer a coin is, the more its value will be. Earlier in its history, Canada mainly used coins of British, American and Spanish descent. It was only in 1858 that coins were minted directly by the Royal Canadian Mint.

As a result, even today many Canadian coins are considered to be very rare. The 1911 silver dollar was described in 1970 as the ‘most valuable coin in the world’ by Guinness Book of Records, and owing to its rarity, was sold for $690,000 US to a Calgary dealer at an auction.

Apart from this silver coin, there are other gold coins that are considered to be very rare such as the Gold Sovereign or the Newfoundland Two Dollars. The Gold Sovereign was first issued in 1489 for Henry VII of England and was made of pure gold. The nominal face value of this coin was £1 or 20 shillings though it was mainly considered to be official bullion and so had no inscription stating its face value. The production of such gold sovereigns was discontinued in 1604 and was replaced by Laurels. In 1817, the minting of such Gold Sovereign coins was started again with the reverse of the coins having a design depicting Saint George slaying a dragon.

Another gold coin considered to be quite rare till today is the Newfoundland Two Dollars coin that had a diameter of 17.98 millimeters and weighed 3.33 grams. These Two Dollar coins were embossed with the picture of Victoria, and had the inscription ‘Newfoundland’ along with the saying ‘By the grace of God, Queen’ etched on its surface. Such Newfoundland gold coins were valued at higher rates than the gold used to manufacture many other coins during the same period.

Before Canada became a confederation in 1867, most of the gold coins that were used were actually manufactured in Great Britain, Portugal, France and Spain. The first gold coins to be minted in Canada were produced in Newfoundland and were a series of two-dollar gold pieces. The only reason that such coins were minted in denominations of just two-dollars was the belief that since gold was too small, it would easily get lost. The imprinting of such gold coins used dies that were developed in London and included a portrait of Victoria, the word ‘NEWFOUNDLAND’ and the abbreviation D. G. REG., which meant ‘By the grace of God, Queen.’ The reverse of the die contained the date of manufacture along with the value of the coin inscribed in one of three ways viz. ‘2 DOLLARS’, ‘ONE HUNDRED PENCE’ and ‘TWO HUNDRED CENTS.’

Since Newfoundland did not have a mint of its own, these gold coins were all minted in England. These two-dollar pieces were produced in 1865, 1870, 1872, 1880, 1881, 1885 and 1888 by the Royal Mint of England and in 1982 by a private minting firm owned by Ralph Heaton and Sons in Birmingham. These 1882 coins bear a small ‘H’ below the date to denote this aspect. During the first and second world wars and just before Newfoundland’s entry into the Confederation, the Mint in Ottawa used to strike the gold coins for Newfoundland. On account of many reasons, these gold Newfoundland coins are considered to be quite rare even today.

Such Newfoundland gold coins were valued at higher rates than the gold used to manufacture many other coins at the same time. This was mainly due to two factors viz. the higher unit cost of these Newfoundland coins and the higher demand of these coins at the time in Canada.

When coins are minted, they are usually described on the basis of various factors such as their country of origin, denomination, mint mark, date, type and condition. Most of these rankings would be accepted as accurate, with the exception of condition as some coins might be minted with stronger metals than others. Also, the condition of a coin cannot be determined simply through the naked eye. It is for this reason that a standard grading coin system has evolved which lays down certain guidelines along which coins are to be graded.

One type of such grading system is the International Coin Certification Service (ICCS) which is located in Toronto, Canada.  It was founded in 1986, and determines the authenticity and condition of various coins. Although ICCS grades coins from different countries, it in particular grades the Canadian dollar. ICCS has now achieved a name for itself and is considered to be very respected in providing consistent grades. The first step in grading coins is to determine whether it the coin is new or has been circulated for some time. After this has been determined, the coin is graded according to the generally accepted grading formats. Some of these more commonly used standard formats are:

  • AG-3      About Good
  • G-4        Good
  • VG-8      Very Good
  • VG-10    Very Good Plus
  • F-12       Fine
  • F-15       Fine Plus
  • VF-20     Very Fine
  • VF-30     Very Fine Plus
  • EF-40     Extremely Fine
  • EF-45     Choice Extremely Fine

Once the coins have been graded, the coins are packaged in a sealed envelope which has the seal of the ICCS grade certificate on one side. This grading certificate signifies a certification number, the assigned grade along with any comments regarding the grade given. Although there are many other grading companies in the world, ICCS is very reputed as it recognizes major and many minor varieties of coins.

Gold Sovereign coins were first minted in 1489 for Henry VII of England. These coins were minted of pure gold and had a face value of £1 or 20 shillings. However, since such coins were considered official bullion, there was no inscription stating their face value. Although, the production of such Gold Sovereigns was discontinued in 1604 and was replaced by Laurels, the minting of these coins was restarted again in 1817.

For ten years between 1908 and 1919, The Canadian Mint at Ottawa minted such Gold Sovereign coins. This Ottawa Mint was specially constructed to manufacture such gold coins and on January 2nd 1908, Canada became the first country outside England to mint British sovereigns. All the coins produced during these ten years are extremely rare even today. Other than gold, there were also other coins minted in silver and ordinary base metal. Today, the Ottawa mint is still in operation but is now called The Royal Canadian Mint.

Between 1908 and 1919, a total of 628,152 Gold Sovereign coins were minted with its highest productions coming in the years 1918 where 106,570 coins were minted and in 1919 when 135,957 coins were produced.

The main reasons why such coins are considered to be quite rare today are that many of them melted down soon after minting, resulting in their destruction. As a result, only a few coins were left leading to their becoming scarce. In 1817, when the minting of such Gold Sovereign coins had restarted, the front portrait was that of King Edward VII and was done by G. W. de Saulles whereas the reverse portrait was prepared by Benedetto Pistrucci and depicted Saint George astride a horse slaying a dragon. As a referral, every Canadian Sovereign gold coin minted in future included the letter ‘C’ under this image to denote that they were minted in Ottawa.

A coin that is struck using a special, high-quality minting die so that its impressions and imprinting is in pristine condition is called a proof coin. Such types of coins are made especially for collectors. Many of the proof coins minted before the twentieth century were distinguished from the regular coins by their polished and high detailed surfaces; however, modern proof coins usually are made using mirror-like fields. The main reason why such proof coins are not seen in circulation is because they are especially made for collectors and are sold at rates which are higher than the face value of the coin.

Normally when printing a coin, two die are used; one die is used for the front design and the other is used for the back design of the coin. However, in the case of minting a proof coin, the dies first need to be polished and then treated using special chemicals so that the finished coin can have a more frosted appearance. Also, when minting such proof coins, the dies used strike the coins twice instead of the usual one time used for regular coins. This is mainly done so that the plain metal is forced into all the visible crevices of the dies giving the finished coin a much sharper image. This results in the coin getting a very fine detailed image. Such proof coins can be distinguished from regular circulated coins by their much sharper designs and rims, along with the much smoother fields.

Grading of proofs is very similar to grading Mint State coins. Here, the grades are preceded by PF and have the same numeric values starting from 60 to 70. An uncirculated proof would be graded as PF-60 while a PF-70 would be graded a perfect proof.
